Summer heralds with spectacular fireworks at Etomo Fishing Port

Kashima — On the evening of November 27, a fireworks festival took place at the Etomo Fishing Port in Kashima-cho, a part of Matsue City. At 7:00 p.m., signal shots were launched into the twilight sky, indicating the event would proceed as planned and drawing many locals to the shore called nada. This event is a local tradition, marking the arrival of summer in the area.

Despite the high cost of living nationwide, the event kicked off without a hitch. Considering Japan’s economic situation, this successful display was almost a miracle for this once-thriving port town.

The Etomo Fishing Port and the adjacent Koura fishing hamlet, where the fireworks were launched, used to be bustling fishing spots but have since become desolate. However, that evening felt like a return to the area’s golden days, with the harbour’s lighthouse shining as brilliantly as ever.

Spectators at the Koura fish processing district sold beef tongue, grilled squid, and oyster ice to the visitors.

At 8:00 p.m., the chairman of the organizing committee announced the countdown, and the fireworks shot up into Etomo’s night sky, mesmerizing the crowd.
