The Descent of Kami: Reviving Tradition at Sada Shrine’s Oimi-san Festival

Kashima ― Sada Shrine has been hosting the annual Oimi-san Festival from November 21 to 25, steeped in tradition and reverence. The shrine, dedicated to Sarutahiko, a guiding deity from the Kojiki, holds a prominent place during Kamiarizuki—the ‘Month of the Gods’—when deities are believed to convene in Izumo.

Legend has it that during this month, countless deities gather at Izumo Grand Shrine for celestial discussions, often related to matchmaking for mortals. Following their journey, many kami find rest at Sada Shrine. The shrine’s precincts are sealed with sacred shimenawa straw ropes to ensure their peace, barring public entry.

The festival fosters a deep sense of community among parishioners (ujiko), with families, students, and locals of all ages participating in the celebrations. Visitors can enjoy zenzai, a traditional sweet red bean soup with rice cakes while experiencing the festival’s atmosphere.

The name Oimi-san, which means refraining from noise or song, underscores the occasion’s solemnity. A key highlight is the arrival of Ryujin, the divine sea snake believed to manifest as Sarutahiko. Ryujin is said to guide the deities ashore at the fishing villages of Koura, Etomo, and Kitaura before leading them to the shrine.

Located in Kashima Town, a suburban area of Matsue, Sada Shrine is regarded as the second most prestigious shrine in the Izumo region. In addition to Sarutahiko, the shrine enshrines eleven other deities, including Izanagi and Izanami, the mythical creators of Japan.
