Matsue - Around 1,000 lanterns have been placed around Matsue Castle and its grounds for the Matsue Suitouro 2024, signalling the arrival of autumn in this historic city. From Sept. 28 to Oct. 20, the event bathes the area in a warm glow as dusk falls, creating a captivating atmosphere.
Since 2003, Matsue City and the Matsue Light Up Caravan have worked together to organize the event, setting up elaborate lantern installations at various points throughout Matsue, known as Japan’s City of Water. Nighttime sightseeing boats glide along the Horikawa River, navigating through the castle moat that is a part of the water city, adding to the magical ambience.
Local residents and companies contribute to the spectacle by crafting intricate lanterns and shimmering art pieces displayed at various locations, including the scenic Shiomi Nawate Street, which runs alongside the river. The lantern displays have grown increasingly elaborate over the years, captivating visitors with their beauty.
In addition to the visual feast, the event invites attendees to immerse themselves in Matsue’s rich cultural heritage. Visitors can enjoy traditional seasonal delicacies from local vendors. The event also features performances throughout its duration, including the rhythmic beat of traditional Do taiko drum performances, heightening the festive atmosphere.
Guests are encouraged to capture the enchanting scenery and share their experiences on social media, promoting Matsue as a premier destination for autumn tourism. The Suitouro has become a beloved annual tradition, offering visitors a unique blend of culture, community, and creativity, making it a must-see for locals and travellers alike.
While most sights can be enjoyed free of charge, admission is required for certain activities, including climbing the castle tower, tasting local sake, and sampling regional cuisine. The light-up event is held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends, providing the perfect opportunity for an evening stroll through the illuminated pathways of Matsue Castle and its surroundings.
